Coal Cover Coasters
Alljoy Design

These coasters are inspired by the Georgian and Victoria era coal covers, highly decorative circular discs of cast iron capping the coal chutes on the footpaths outside the grand houses of Dublin’s Georgian squares.
The various patterns are intended to add grip to the surface to stop pedestrians slipping on rainy days. Foundries began experimenting with pattern to add interest and personality to these cast iron covers. During our covid era rambles around Merrion Square, we began noticing these more, paying attention to the variety of patterns and the incredible details. To us, they translated perfectly as felt placemats and coasters. We were drawn to the more geometric patterns (always!)
Laser-cut in 5mm hard-wearing felt in Dublin by Alljoy Design, these geometric coasters will serve you practically while adding some colour to your table setting. We have chosen colours which complement each other, encouraging users to mix and match. Matching placemats are available here.
