Functionality is key in every piece by Dunbeacon Pottery. Situated on the stunning sheeps head peninsula in West Cork, every item in the range is designed, thrown and glazed by Dublin native Helen Ennis who took over this pottery studio in 2000. Producing essential kitchenware from stoneware clay, in three simple glazes, Helen takes inspiration from the surrounding landscape to create understated items for everyday use.
On a beautiful Summers day, we made the four hour drive to Helen's studio located outside Durrus to gain a greater insight into her practice: Dunbeacon Pottery
Each soap dish is individually handmade by Helen, while maintaining continuity of form and consistency in their style. This entire process can be viewed at her workshop in West Cork, right from the initial stages of processing the clay, to the displayed finished product.
Helen chose stoneware for its durability and strength, and combines this with recycled clay - strengthening it even more for throwing. Opting for an electric kiln with controlled temperature firing, and carefully planning the space to fit as much as possible in each firing, are small ways that Helen can control the impact her practice has on our environment.
