James Carroll

James Carroll

James Carroll lives and works at his home in Glenealy in the Wicklow mountains. As a multi-disciplinary designer and maker, he practices many crafts but it’s his love of woodworking which began in his teens that remains an enduring passion finding expression in his furniture making. James has a very responsive relationship to his environment and materials, growing and managing his own woodland where he practices coppicing to generate his own green wood. Passionate about traditional Irish woodworking skills he is keen to revive and maintain the ancient techniques of working with hand tools to cut and shape untreated wood. His responsive relationship with the material often brings a playful approach to the design process, the natural shape of the wood often dictating the form of the finished piece. The stool is one of James’ favourite things to make as is evidenced by the individual character and craftsmanship of each.

You can read more about James' other business in our Stories section from where we went to visit his Christmas tree farm in Co. Wicklow.
