Eddie Doherty

Eddie Doherty

Eddie Doherty is one of the last of a breed of hand weavers left in Ireland. Working on his hand and foot-powered loom in Ardara co. Donegal he welcomes visitors to his workshop and showroom, gladly demonstrating how he weaves the blankets to anyone who calls by. Eddie learned to weave at the age of 16 to avoid having to emigrate, he progressed from filling bobbins for the master weaver to working on the bench of the loom. He worked in the tweed manufacturing industry for many years when large fabric companies were a big employer in the area, before setting up on his own on the main street of Ardara.
