Hanna Van Aelst

Hanna Van Aelst

Hanna is a Tipperary based basket maker and sculptor. Inspired by her surrounding rural landscape, she creates pieces which are guided by the raw material, willow, which grows readily in Ireland. Once woven it forms a solid and strong structure. All the willow used in Hanna’s work is grown and harvested by her on her own land. The growing of the material is part of her creative process. Over the past ten years, Hanna has established beds of different willow varieties, selected for bark colour, vigour and habitat of growth.

“I love being involved from start to finish with the material. From planting through to harvesting and sorting and finally weaving.” - Hanna
