Pestle & Mortar
Used for grinding food and flavours together for centuries, a pestle and mortar should not only look beautiful but will last a lifetime. The mortar is made from heavy durable stoneware, with a glossy buttermilk glaze and a lip for pouring. The close grain of the Sycamore timber lends itself to a sturdy pestle that feels like it’s made to fit your hand.
We asked two of our favourite makers to help us produce this as part of our Áras homeware collection. Rosemarie Durr hand-throws the ceramic mortar in her studio in Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny and Eoghan Leabetter hand-turns the beautifully tactile pestles in his workshop in Jerpoint, Co. Kilkenny.
Mortar Dimensions: 13.5cm x 6cm // Pestle Dimensions: 13cm x 4.8cm x 4.2cm
Sustainability:
When a tree falls the most ideal scenario is to let it decay and return to the soil. However people need useful objects, utensils and tableware. Man made materials can often be destructive, extractive and unsustainable. Wood is, when properly managed, a sustainable material.
