Rosemarie Durr is based in Castlecomer, Kilkenny. Her studio is located in the Craft Yard of Castlecomer Discovery Park, a former estate. This converted farmyard is a fitting place to find her at work given that Rosemarie’s strong appreciation of tradition and beauty in the everyday stem from her home life growing up in Roscommon; “life on a busy family farm shaped an appreciation for carrying tradition and care and a sense of home within you”. Freshly baked bread, milk from a jug, a kettle on the range, were staples of her life which she credits as creating this sense of home and it’s an important consideration to her ceramic collections she likes to bring them home and “live with them for a while” to hone her designs.
Having originally trained in graphic design, Rosemarie fell in love with ceramics “from the minute I touched the clay” on a night course in pottery which prompted a career move. Her Stacking Range is a new departure in her work, having previously delighted in the uniqueness of the hand thrown her aim with this collection is to streamline her pieces. It’s a collection that relies on technical precision, there is no room for error in creating these interlocking pieces which really showcase her skill as a potter.
