The Horned God
One of a collection of illustrations based on Irish mythology and folklore. A limited edition print of an original pencil drawing by Denise Nestor. The stag and flowers are rendered in the same intricate texture detail that is synonymous with Denise's drawing style.
In Celtic terms, the stag represented the renewal of nature and the fertility of the forest. Understood more generally as a symbol of the natural world, the stag was dangerous but also benign and beneficial. Cernunnos was the Celtic god of fertility, animals, wealth, and the underworld. Sometimes depicted as a man with antlers, he was referred to as ‘The Horned God’.

Denise Nestor is an artist and illustrator, originally from Co. Mayo in the west of Ireland, now based in Dublin. She works as both an artist and an illustrator. Her illustrations have featured in a number of publications including The New York Times, National Geographic, The Guardian and The Atlantic. Denise always aims to have her prints look as close to the original pencil drawings as possible, even down to the specific grain of paper, making it difficult to tell the difference.
