Wren Cards
A set of 6 seasonal cards depicting a little Wren/ Dreoilín amongst winter foliage in Sonia's typical botanical illustrative style.
The Wren is associated with St. Stephens day celebrations in Ireland and there are several traditional folk tales that display it as being a trickster. This rhyme below is one of several versions sung by wren boys on St Stephens day.
The Wren, the king of all birds. On Stephens Day I was caught in the furze. Although I am little my family is great, Rise up landlady and give us a trate. Up with the kettle and down with the pan, Give a few pence to bury the Wran. Then I'll dip my mings in a barrel of beer, And I'll wish you all a happy New Year.
The above is printed on the back of the card which measures 215mm x 105mm and is left blank inside for your own seasonal message.
Kilcoe Studios, based in Skibbereen, West Cork, was founded in 2012 by Sonia Caldwell and Eamon Quinn, as a means to fund other artistic practices. Each card and calendar is the watercolour paintings of Sonia, as she explores the wildlife around her and the abundance of gardens and knowledge in the area.
Sonia primarily works with stone to create hand-chiseled bowls and vessels but over time the depth of our plant world became more and more fascinating to her. Now Kilcoe Studios depicts the extensive range of native Irish plants and trees and not only shares the beautiful watercolour images in the products but also shares wonderful facts and information from our heritage and folklore.
All packaging is recyclable and proudly plastic free. All card and paper that the cards and calendar are printed on are made from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified paper. Everything is printed locally by a family print business based in Cork City - City Print.
